Austria Plans to Demolish Adolf Hitler's Birthplace

Johannes Simon/Getty Images(BRAUNAU AM INN, Austria) — Austria has decided to tear down Adolf Hitler’s birthplace.

The home in Braunau am Inn, Austria, where the Nazi Party leader was born, will be demolished and a new building will be used for charity or local authorities, according to Austrian newspaper Die Presse.

The demolition has yet to be approved by parliament, however, as the three-story building’s owner has refused to sell the building. The government has rented the property from Gerlinde Pommer since 1972, but it has been unoccupied for the last five years since she has refused to undertake repairs.

Officials have held talks for years on how to prevent the site from attracting Nazi sympathizers. Others had suggested turning the building into a refugee center or a museum.

The building is unmarked except for a stone outside that reads, “Never again Fascism. In memory of millions of dead.”
