The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation after an officer was struck and ran over by a vehicle while attempting to apprehend a suspect just after 4:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Ohatchee Police Chief Jason Oden along with Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade held a joint press conference on Monday afternoon to outline details regarding the case.

Sheriff Wade said that deputies and officer attempted to get Fred Lee Barksdale out of the truck he cranked the vehicle and “floored it”. Barksdale then struck two trees before running over a deputy and crashing into a large pine tree, which forced the vehicle to a stop.

Wade says during the encounter both deputies and the officer opened fire on the suspect, who was shot multiple times.

Sheriff Wade said that all of the officers/deputies involved were wearing body cameras and that the videos would be released at later date due to the ongoing investigation. At this time Sheriff Wade said that they are actively pursuing charges of Violation of a Protection Order, Attempted Murder and Assault 1st Degree however those charges are pending at this time. Barksdale does have active Felony Warrants for Obstruction of Justice and Receiving Stolen Property in addition to a Misdemeanor Warrant for a Traffic Violation.

The deputy who was struck suffered injuries to his foot, leg and back.

The City of Oxford and JSU Center for Applied for Forensics will be assisting in the investigation.
