Basketball Star Derrick Rose Testifies in Rape Lawsuit Trial

iStock/Thinkstock(LOS ANGELES) — NBA star Derrick Rose entered a Los Angeles courthouse on Friday to testify in a case in which he and two friends are accused of raping his ex-girlfriend.

A central issue in the lawsuit concerns consent. Rose says he interpreted a text message he received from the woman to have sex with her later that night as consent.

According to an ESPN report, Rose testified, “I was assuming that all of us going over there that she wanted to have sex with all of us.”

He further claims the woman only said, “Stop” after the three men headed to the bedroom in her apartment.

The 30-year-old woman’s account of that night differs significantly from Rose’s. ESPN reports her testimony lasted a day and a half. She claims she blacked out, recalling “flashes” of the night after reading text messages she was sending despite being drunk and possibly drugged.

Rose and the two men, both of whom are friends of his from adolescence, deny her allegations.

Rose, 28, was traded to the New York Knicks this offseason after spending the first seven years of his career with the Chicago Bulls. The star won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award in 2011.
