Bear Cub Struck By A Vehicle On Highway 35 On Tuesday / UPDATED

UPDATE

We are sad to report that the small bear cub that was hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon on Highway 35 near Blanche – has died.

The bear reportedly suffered a broken lower jaw during the incident.  A motorist placed the injured cub in the back of a truck and carried it to the old Rip’s One Stop location at Blanche Crossroads where Department of Game & Fish officials took possession, then transported it to a medical facility in Tennessee.

The cub was expected to survive.  We’ve since received word however, that even though it’s condition had improved enough to undergo surgery for the broken jaw, it later died.

That’s all the information we have at this time.

No one in the vehicle that accidentally struck the cub was hurt.

The Broomtown Fire Department, National Park Service officials, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Floyd EMS Medics all responded to the scene.
