Bob Weinstein calls brother Harvey “very sick,” a “world class liar”; BAFTA suspends Harvey Weinstein membership

GC Images/Raymond Hall(LOS ANGELES) — Bob Weinstein, the brother of disgraced movie mogul Harvey, and his former partner in both Miramax and subsequently the Weinstein Company, has fired off a scathing statement about him to TMZ.

The statement appears to be in response to accusations made by Harvey that his brother leaked information to The New York Times as part of the paper’s bombshell story about Harvey’s decades of alleged sexual harassment, and also alleged sexual abuse, of a series of actresses.

“My brother Harvey is obviously a very sick man,” Bob Weinstein’s statement begins. “I’ve urged him to seek immediate professional help because he is in dire need of it. His remorse and apologies to the victims of his abuse are hollow. He said he would go away for help and has yet to do so.”

The statement continues: “He has proven himself to be a world class liar and now rather than seeking help he is looking to blame others. His assertion is categorically untrue from A to Z. I pray he gets the help that he needs and I believe that it is him behind all of these stories to distract from his own failure to get help.”

The gossip site reports that Harvey Weinstein has left the country to seek sex addiction treatment in Europe. His wife, Georgina Chapman, has announced she’s leaving her husband of ten years.

Also, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts — the British equivalent of the American Oscar and Emmy organizations — has suspended Weinstein’s membership.  A statement on the BAFTA official website declares, “Whilst BAFTA has previously been a beneficiary of Mr Weinstein’s support for its charitable work, it considers the reported alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with BAFTA’s values.”

The statement also notes: “We hope this announcement sends a clear message that such behaviour has absolutely no place in our industry.”
