Body of Missing Teen Identified Following Discovery in DeKalb County

The body found in a DeKalb County creek has been identified.

Koy Jacob Spears, a native of Geraldine, was discovered Tuesday evening in South Sauty Creek, just downstream from Buck’s Pocket. The 18 year old was reported missing on the night of February 22th when a vehicle was swept away by flood waters. Two other people were rescued and taken to the hospital, with Spears nowhere to be seen, even after three weeks of law enforcement led searches.

The teen’s body was found by four fishermen who were in a boat near Morgens Cove boat ramp off Highway 227, according to Captain Gary Buchanan of the Alabama marine patrol. The body was then transported to Huntsville following discovery for processing and identification.

An autopsy of Spears was performed on Wednesday morning, but DeKalb County Coroner Tom Wilson said a cause of death has yet to be determined.
