Bresha Webb can’t get enough of playing the sassy, successful, and extremely fashionable Renee in her new Starz series Run the World

Beside having numerous similarities to her spunky character, Webb tells ABC Audio that the best part of being on a show that follows four friends navigating love, life and career, is showing that women — specifically Black women — don’t “have to be perfect in order to have it all”.

“We can have it all,” she says. “We can be messy. We can have men desiring — Black men desiring us — as successful women. And us still being messy and messing up and maybe getting back together. You know, I just love that [we can show] our lives are like this…. And it’s not like a cookie-cutter-wrapped-in-a-bow type of show.”

This accurate portrayal, Webb notes, is thanks to series creator Leigh Davenport, and co-executive producer Yvette Lee Bowser, whom she says have a track record of authenticity.

“That was one thing that I loved about Yvette Lee Bowser and the characters that she has helped bring to life, from Living SingleA Different WorldBlack-ish and Dear White People. She does a great job of getting to know the cast one-on-one, and having those conversations that make you feel comfortable to be these women,” Webb explains. “And Leigh Davenport did an amazing job of just constructing these characters that were out of her life — and her life — and making sure that they had the beauty and the complexities of women that she knows in Harlem and that she loves as well.”

Run the World, also starring Amber Stevens WestAndrea Bordeaux, and Corbin Reid airs Sunday nights at 8:30 p.m. ET on Starz.
