Cedar Bluff hangs on for 14-12 win over Sumiton Christian

Staff Reports

CEDAR BLUFF – The Cedar Bluff Tigers held on for a 14-12 Class 1A, Region 7 football victory over visiting Sumiton Christian on Friday.

The Tigers (1-2, 1-1) took the lead in the second quarter on Anbre Leek’s 16-yard run. Nick Clifton added the extra point for a 7-0 Tiger advantage.

Bucky Leek extended Cedar Bluff’s advantage on a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 14-0 advantage, but the Eagles battled back.

After the Tigers muffed a punt, Sumiton Christian (1-2, 0-1) scored on Eli Moon’s 3-yard touchdown run. The try for two failed, keeping the score at 14-6.

Cedar Bluff was forced to punt on its ensuing possession, which led to Jordon Robertson’s 83-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Reid Nix. Once again, the Eagles went for two and were unable to convert.

The Tigers made a couple of first downs on their next possession to kill the clock and preserve the win.

“I’m just proud of our guys,” McWhorter said. “We had to fight through some adversity. A lot of it was our own doing there at the end, but our kids found a way to get our first win, and that’s important. We had a couple of drives early where we easily could have scored but didn’t. I feel like overall the defense played real well. I’m just proud of the guys for getting that first win. It’s important for that to happen.”

Cedar Bluff hosts Dade County, Ga., next Friday.
