One person has been taken into custody following a high speed pursuit that began in Leesburg at around 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Investigators and Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office along with Leesburg Police were involved in the pursuit that started when officers attempted to stop a Buick SUV on Lokey Street near JT Mackey Street when the driver sped away. The pursuit entered Highway 411 South towards Etowah County where speeds reached around 100 miles per hour.

Additional units from Gadsden Police and Etowah County Sheriff’s Office joined the chase near North Gadsden where spike strips were successfully deployed near the Dollar General Store.

Cherokee County Chief Deputy Josh Summerford said that the incident began as officers were attempting to arrest 29 year old Nicholas Banks of Cedar Bluff on a Court Order.

He was arrested on Wednesday of this week on charges of Domestic Violence and Resisting Arrest.

Banks was taken into custody and will face additional charges of Attempting to Elude, Reckless Endangerment and Resisting Arrest.
