Centre City Council Accepts Resignation Of Fire Chief

Following a lengthy Executive Session, the Centre City Council officially accepted the resignation of Fire Chief Will Gardner during their regular meeting on Tuesday. The matter passed by a 5-1 margin with Councilman Harry Moon voting against the measure due to the context of the letter. We spoke with Gardner following the meeting and will be obtaining a copy of his letter.

In other business, the council approved minutes from the previous meeting and also approved the appointment of an advisory committee for the Hatcher High Community Center.

Councilman Cedric Williams stated that the responsibilities of that committee will be to inspect the facility after each use to ensure the building is generally in good shape and left clean.

That committee will also have the authority to observe how the building is being used, although no authority to discipline or expel anyone from the facility, but authority to contact the proper city officials when the building or building rules are being abused.

That committee will be; Bo Hood, Tommy Price and Ethel Carson.

The council also approved the purchase of some additional benches and planters to continue the revitalization of Main Street, Councilmember Kay Davis said that citizens that wish to do so can purchase a bench in memory or in honor of someone at a cost of $400.

Mayor Pro-Tem Bess Yarbrough announced that plans for the annual Fall Festival are in full swing, this year’s event is set for October, 6 in downtown. Vendor applications are available at Centre City Hall and we will also be posting the application on our website soon. Yarbrough also said that volunteers are needed, if you wish to help out in anyway please contact Centre City Hall.

Mayor Wilkie has been working with Museum Director Kathy Marko and Superintendent of Education Mitchell Guice have been discussing an outdoor concert st the old Centre Middle School football field in conjunction with the Fall Festival, more details will be forthcoming.

The Council also approved the posting of a position of a certified or non certified police officer.
