Centre Mail Carrier Receives “Hometown Hero” Award from Weiss Lake Improvement Association

The Weiss Lake Improvement Association has a new award to be presented to a local citizen deemed to be A Hometown Hero.

The first award was presented to a Gaylesville resident during the monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday morning.  WLIA member Jamey Johnson presented that award to the person who pulled both a man and his daughter from the swift waters of Weiss Lake, back on October 10th last year (2021) – saving their lives.

Here is Johnson with the presentation:

The incident happened as Tim Colbert was in the process of taking his boat out at the Leesburg Landing; people on the bank began motioning for him to go down the canal.  As he arrived in that area, more people directed him to a location where he found the two in the water.   He quickly tossed out life jackets – then pulled them into his boat.

Colbert, a longtime mail carrier for the US Postal Service in Centre, told WEIS Radio he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

To us, and the public at large, he is the definition of a Hometown Hero.
