Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Airport to Receive Federal Grant Money to Help Offset Losses from Coronavirus Pandemic

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday that Alabama airports are in line to receive some $54 million in federal grants to help offset losses from the coronavirus pandemic – and the Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport is among those on that list.  Those grants are part of the CARES Act recently passed by Congress, which includes a total of $10 billion in funding for airports nationwide.  Alabama airports expect tens of millions in operating losses due to the virtual elimination of passenger traffic – which is also affecting revenue at hotel airports and parking revenue.

The bulk of Alabama’s funding is targeted for three airports – Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International at $18,745,394; Mobile Regional at $15,103,747; and Huntsville International at $13,785,691.  The Huntsville airport – which is the state’s second-busiest for passenger traffic – originally projected losses of $7-10 million but said Tuesday those losses could top $20 million.

Altogether, 73 airports across Alabama will receive at least $1,000 in funding.  The Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport is scheduled to receive $30,000.
