Centre’s Joel Wester Selected To The National Junior College Athletic Association All-Academic Team

Gadsden, Ala.–The National Junior College Athletic Association recently announced its All-Academic teams for 2017-18 recognizing 17 Gadsden State student-athletes and two athletic teams for their academic achievement. 

The Cardinal athletes were part of a record number 287 student-athletes from the Alabama Community College Conference awarded NJCAA honors for their academic achievement.

Cardinal teams qualifying include men’s tennis with a 3.31 GPA and volleyball with a 3.28. To qualify as an academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA. Buster Stewart is head coach of the tennis team and Connie Clark is head coach for volleyball.  

Cardinal players with a 4.0 GPA receiving First Team honors include Savannah Beck of Alexandria and Alexis Rich in volleyball; Alexander Boozer of Pell City and Joel Wester of Centre in men’s tennis and Elijah “Luke” Graham of Rainsville in men’s basketball.

Student-athletes with a 3.80 to 3.99 GPA named to the Second Team include Kiamsha Jones of Madison and Kelsey Patterson of Southside in women’s basketball; Nicholas Looney of Steele in men’s basketball and Stephen Walker of Cedartown, Ga. in men’s tennis. 

Eight student-athletes with GPAs of 3.60 to 3.79 were named to the Third Team including Annie Crump of Jasper, Taylor Hackett of  Chelsea, Morgan Hudson of Arley, Morgan Newton of Grant and Madison Shelby of Huntsville in volleyball; Macary Humphrey of Decatur and Tori Sanders of Brindlee Mountain in women’s basketball and Hunter Gay of Clanton in men’s tennis.

“In addition to school and games, our athletes spend numerous hours in practice, strength training and community service,” said Mike Cancilla, athletic director. “We are so proud of their accomplishments.”
