Following some lengthy and detailed discussion held during a Work Session on Tuesday the Board agreed that due to short falls on the state level, the additional revenue would be vital in funding personnel. During the Work Session no decision was made at that time as to whether or not they would request to have it renewed.
Just prior to the regular meeting, the agenda was amended to include the approval of the tax, and again following some lengthy discussion the board voted to allow Superintendent Mitchell Guice to present a request to the Cherokee County Commission, the board is requesting the renewal of the One Percent Sales Tax with Perpetuity. It was the unanimous consensus of the board that the money would be used for personnel.
The next step will be for the County Commission to either accept or deny the School Boards request.
In other business, the board also from Gaylesville Principal Scott Hayes and Sand Rock Principal Ben East who presented the AdvancED Self Assessment reports for their respective schools, the board also received the September 2015 Bank Reconciliation, Cash Balance and Financial report, reviewed the accounts payable for October and adopted two policy revisions that were presented at the October 8th meeting.
Bids were also accepted for the construction of a new gym at Gaylesville School from Boatner Construction in the amount of $1,873,000.00 and also from JF Morgan in the amount of $973,000 for the construction of a new AG and Family and Consumer Sciences Building at Spring Garden.
Personnel items included; the retirement of Edna Jolly , bus driver, after 31 ½ years of service; Kathy Silver, Secretary at the Career & Tech Center with 14 years of service; and Thersia L Smith, bus driver at Cedar Bluff School after 11 ½ years of service.
Certified Placements included; Ricky Pollard, bus driver for Centre Schools, the board also approved the contract for Susan Cook as School Psycometrist.
Leave of Absences was approved for Heather Maddox at Centre Elementary and Carlie Lawson at Sand Rock.
The next meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education will be December 8th at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Board Office in Centre.
