A Centre Elementary School Parent is speaking out after what she reffered to as an “offensive” song which was played recently at a school dance held at the school last Friday.
Melissa Coulis stated that she felt the Disney Toons version of the popular Rap song “Drop That Nae Nae” performed originally by Artist We Are Toons, should be removed from the schools Nintendo Wii Fitness Program.
Following some lengthy discussion, Superintendent of Education presented the song and video in question via an I pad device so that everyone in attendance who wished to do so could view the video in order to have a better understanding of what exactly was in question.
After viewing the video each of the five board members and the superintendent all expressed that they were in no way offended by what they had saw and heard – Superintendent Guice stated that there were as many as 400 people in attendance at the function and that this was the first complaint he had addressed.
Mr. Guice recognized Transportation Supervisor Harold Pearson for Outstanding Bus Inspection results recently received from the State.
Also the Superintendent recognized Gaylesville and Cherokee County High Schools for their efforts in reduction of power consumption as a result of the recent energy conservation program entered into with Cenergistic Energy, Gaylesville School received a check in the amount of $15oo with Cherokee County High School receiving $3000.
The Board also agreed to enter into a Professional Services Contract with RA-LIN Construction and Associates for Construction Management and agreed to cancel its contract with Honeywell – the school board will instead use the savings of over $46,000 per year to hire an in house HVAC Maintenance employee with that posting approved.
Out of State Travel was approved for Coach Leah Goss, Girls Basketball Coach at Cherokee County High School to attend the Spring Nike Championship Basketball Clinic on April 10-12, 2015 in Mrytle Beach, South Carolina which will be funded by the basketball program.
In personnel action – the board recognized the retirement of longtime Sand Rock Head Football Coach Russell Jacoway after serving 32 years in that position – Jacoway will be leaving to take a position with the Cenergistic Energy Company and will serve as their liaison in Cherokee County Schools.
Contract Employment included Hurley Foster – Part Time Bus Driver – effective February, 23 , 2015.
Leave of Absence was also approved for Anna Smith, Counselor at Sand Rock School and Randy Smith, Federal Programs Coordinator.
The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education is scheduled for Thursday, March, 6th at 6:00pm.
