Cherokee County Claims Class 4A Area 12 Crown

CENTRE – The Cherokee County Warriors earned another Class 4A, Area 12 boys basketball championship Saturday night with a 61-46 victory over Sardis.

Quartez Henderson led the charge for the eighth-ranked Warriors (23-7) with 20 points. Joel Wester connected on three treys, including two in the fourth quarter, and finished with 13 points. Tyren Dupree delivered nine points. Jacob Graves added seven points and Nahum Horton contributed five points.

“Winning another area championship is a big deal for us,” Cherokee County head coach Neal Wester said. “I’m just so proud of our kids. They played well. We got off to a slow start, but then we got things rolling. It’s exciting to host another sub-regional game.”

The Warrior win sets up another sub-regional showdown with the Saks Wildcats on Tuesday in Centre. Saks lost to No. 10 White Plains 61-46 in the Area 11 final on Saturday.

Cherokee County rallied from seven down in the fourth quarter and won last year’s meeting with Saks 62-61 on a 3-pointer by Joel Wester.

“It was a one-point game last year, and they’ve got another good team,” Coach Wester said of Saks. “They’re quick and athletic, so it’s going to be tough. It’s going to take our best effort. I hope our guys will respond to the challenge.”
