Cherokee County Commission Awards Contract For Causeway Tree Cutting Project

During the Planning Session held prior to Monday’s regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission – Commissioners heard from representatives of Bedwell & Whorton LLC who have been awarded the contract for the removal of the trees along the Alabama Highway 9 Causeway between Centre and Cedar Bluff.

The first step will be to completely spray the Causeway which will have to set for several days before the actual cutting begins. Once the cutting begins crews will have to flag traffic which will be reduced to one lane while the cutting is in progress. Work is set to begin any day.

Mark Collins with the Weiss Lake Improvement Association was also in attendance to request that they be allowed to cut some of the larger trees which remain in the lake to be used as fish habitats, that request was granted.

Cherokee County Parks & Recreation Board Treasurer Jerry Baker presented the proposed budget on behalf of the Park Board and Chief of Corrections Harley Lamey also presented the proposed budget for the Cherokee County Detention Center.

During the regular meeting the Commission approved a number of excess land redemptions, approved the appointment of John Holbrook to the Cherokee County Library Board to fill the unexpired term ending February 2021 and approved the adoption of an amended resolution enacting Act 2017-459 for Cherokee County, levying a lodging tax, with the effective start date of November 1, 2017.

The Commission also approved several personnel items which included the following transfers; Kyle Mize from Appraisal Clerk to Mapper and Megan Gentry from Housekeeper to Appraisal Clerk.

The hire of Kaley Reed as Revenue Commissioner Clerk was approved and the Commission approved a Job Posting for a Housekeeper at the Administrative Building.

In other business, the Commission awarded the 2017-2018 Inmate Food Bid to Performance Food Service for the period of October 1, 2017 – September 30, 2018 and also approved the renegotiated 911 Dispatch agreement with the Cherokee County Communications District in the amount of $117,958.77 and approved the annual Highway Department bids for the period of October 1, 2017 – September 30, 2018 as presented by County Engineer Corey Chambers.

An amendment to the Contract of County Engineer Corey Chambers was approved as published and a contract with Southern Health Partners in the amount of $237,731.40.

A special called meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will take place on Friday at 3:30 for the purpose of passing the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget. The nest regular meeting of the County Commission meeting will be October, 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the Commission Chambers.
