Cherokee County Commission Begins Budget Planning Process

Cherokee County Commission - Special Called Meeting 1This year’s Budget Planning Process will be considerably more complicated than usual for the Cherokee County Commission in the wake of new legislation which will go into effect in early 2016:

That’s County Commissioner Carlton Teague.

Commissioner Kimball Parker echoed Teague’s comments following Monday’s meeting:

The Commission is still awaiting figures from Sheriff Jeff Shaver regarding what the change in law will mean in regard to how much the jail population could possibly increase by – and what that will translate to, dollar-wise.

It currently costs approximately $48 a day to house an inmate, which means any significant increase in jail population would result in a substantial financial burden to the county; and, at this point, it’s unclear where the additional revenue will come from.

That’s Commission Chairman Kirk Day.

County Engineer Corey Chambers submitted his proposed Highway Department Budget to the commission for consideration and a slight increase in recording fee costs at the Probate Office was also discussed; and, Theresa Hulgan, Executive Director of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce requested annual funding for the Chamber – this time, in the form of a sponsorship, with a proposal being submitted.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, July 27th, at 5:00pm in the County Administration Building in Centre.

The next two morning meetings – scheduled for August 10th and September 14th – will get underway earlier than usual – with the budget planning portion of the planning session set to start at 8:00am and the regular meeting still beginning at 10:00am.
