The Monday meeting of the Cherokee County Commission featured a lengthy agenda – with District IV Commissioner Carlton Teague filling in for Commission Chairman Kirk Day; also Senator Phil Williams was in attendance, choosing to pay a visit to the county during some rare downtime.
Opening that meeting, Commissioner Teague announced the appointment/re-appointment of the District IV Representative of the Cherokee County Industrial Development Authority would be made during the February 9th meeting of the County Commission – with resumes being accepted through Wednesday, February 4th and the Northeast Alabama Water Board appointment/re-appointment will be made during that same meeting, with those resumes also being accepted through the 4th.
The Commission voted to adopt the Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday Resolution for 2015; and that resolution allows consumers to purchase weather-related items, such as flashlights, batteries, generators and so on without paying local taxes February 20th – 22nd
It was also voted to reduce the speed limit on County Road 505 from 45 mph to 15 mph; on County Road 555 from 45 mph to 25 mph and on County Road 557 from 45 mph to 25 mph.
Leanne Hill was appointed and Jeffrey Wolff was re-appointed to the Cherokee County Park Board for the term ending January of 2021.
In other business the Commission approved exemptions of garbage collection fees for 2015 for those meeting the necessary criteria; that, as submitted by the Cherokee County Health Department.
It was also voted to support the Sheriff’s Booking Fee Bill, and Sheriff’s Qualification Bill, to be sent to the 2015 Legislature for consideration.
The Commission additionally approved $13,599.18 to be paid to Surveillance Concepts, LLC for enhancements to be made to the Courthouse security system; the money will come from Capital Improvements Funds.
The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is slated for Monday January 26th at 5:00pm – taking place in the County Administration Building in Centre.
