Cherokee County Commission Meeting / Sand Rock Community to Get New Safe Room Shelter

There was good news for all those in the Sand Rock community during the Monday meeting of the Cherokee County Commission: a bid was accepted for the construction of a safe room shelter by the firm of Aqua Marine Enterprise, Inc., also known as Safe-T-Shelter.

EMA Director Shawn Rogers informed commission members that the company had entered the only bid, which was opened June 8th, in the amount of $89,495 – and upon acceptance of the bid, would have 180 days to complete the project, according to grant guidelines.  Rogers stated that this would be a “turn-key” project, with the company handling all aspects, from start-to-finish, with no additional contractors involved.

Commissioner Carlton Teague, filling in for Chairman Tim Burgess, who was out of town at a Probate Judge’s conference, also had words of praise for another municipality after their adoption of an ordinance aimed at helping keep Weiss Lake clean:

In other business – the commission approved the Memorandum of Understanding with the Rotary Club of Centre defining purposes for which previously approved fund appropriation amounts for the SO COOL Summer Program may be used; they additionally agreed to allow a vehicle from the Highway Department to be declared surplus and approved Tax Revenue Enhancement Agreements between the Cherokee County Commission and RDS.

During the Planning Session held prior to the regular meeting, County Administrator Daniel Steel briefly discussed with commission members information which he had provided, with an eye toward beginning the process of putting together a preliminary budget.

They commission also met briefly with Kevin Shaw, the new Director for EC Waste who has been with the company locally since mid-March.  Shaw discussed some improvements that the company is introducing, especially in the way of communication.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, June 25th, at 5:00pm in the County Administration Building on the Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
