Cherokee County Commission Recognizes April as “National Community College Month”

Gadsden State Cherokee Campus Director Luanne Hayes along with Dr. Leslie Worthington, the Dean of Academic Programs & Services and Enrollment Specialist Amanda Martin were on hand as members of the Cherokee County Commission adopted a resolution recognizing April as National Community College Month during their Monday morning meeting.

Commissioner Marcie Foster read that proclamation into the record, prior to Chairman Tim Burgess presenting the representatives with a copy of the official resolution.

In other business – Keisha Payne of Gaylesville was hired to fill the position as housekeeper at the Cherokee County Administrative Building.

During the Planning Session, which was held prior to the regular meeting, Cherokee County Animal Control Officer Dustin Dutton briefly discussed the new Emily’s Law Animal Control Law which will be going into effect statewide June 1st, and the ramifications that will have not only on his department, but on the county as a whole.  Further discussion between Dutton and the County Commission is planned as the new law is fine-tuned prior to being put into place.

EMA Director Shawn Rogers also shared with the Commission information on development of a new app incorporating new streamlined, more-effective features that will be integrated with the CodeRed system giving users the most complete, effective tool in existence when it comes to weather alerts and safety information.

Representatives from Volkert, Inc. were also present to discuss the possible construction of a new courthouse, or renovation of the present courthouse, in the future.  That meeting was merely an opening discussion kept to the “what if” stages of conversation, keeping the door open for further discussion later on.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, April 23rd at 5:00pm in the County Administration Building on the Cedar Bluff Road in Center.
