Mental and substance use disorders are prevalent in our community and it’s imperative that individuals in Cherokee County understand how to seek help. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2016, an estimated 5000 adults in Cherokee County were affected by a mental disorder. In addition, an estimated 2500 adults in Cherokee County were affected by substance use disorders and between 3% and 5% of the adult population experience both a mental health issue and a substance abuse issue.

To address this significant problem, the Cherokee County Commission will issue a proclamation naming September as National Recovery Month, raising awareness about prevention, treatment, and recovery support services in the area. Additionally, Sheila Hurley, M.S., Executive Director of Cherokee-Etowah-Dekalb Mental Health will discuss local mental and substance use disorder programs and highlight individuals in recovery.

After the signing of the proclamation, attendees and all citizens of Cherokee County are encouraged to join in events around the community to highlight the significance of helping people in need of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services, while also celebrating the accomplishments of individuals in recovery.
