Cherokee County Detention Center Getting Some Much Needed Upgrades

Jail1The Cherokee County Detention Center is finally seeing some much needed and long overdue renovations, contractors have been working for the last several days replacing the roof at the jail.

We sat down with Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver on Friday who said that the roof has been in need of replacing for quite some time, Shaver said that the old roof is over 20 years old and has more than outlived its time.

Sheriff Shaver said that frequently when it would rain they would have to place buckets throughout the jail in order to catch the water and that the problem was progressively getting worse especially with the recent heavy rains.

The new roof is expected to be completed soon. The Detention Center will also be getting an all new, state of the art camera surveillance system.

The Sheriff said that the current system is practically obsolete as it has been piece together overtime with the replacing and adding of cameras. Chief of Corrections Harley Lamey said that in the event they need to pull an image off of the current system the quality is very poor.

Sheriff Shaver said that the quality of the video they will be getting will better allow them to monitor the jail and all the activities that go on inside the facility, Shaver said that like the roof, this is something that has been needed for a long time.
