Cherokee County Driver’s License Office Set To Reopen One Day A Month Beginning Tuesday

Beginning next week, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will reopen satellite driver’s license offices that it closed a month ago in 30 counties.

ALEA will send a license examiner to most of the offices one day a month. Two offices will be staffed two days or more a month.

Some critics of the initial decision to close the offices say the new plan is still not adequate. The governor said the new schedule could be adjusted according to need.

The agency has posted the schedule on its website.

ALEA’s decision to close the offices, which it blamed on a staff shortage caused by budget cuts, drew criticism from lawmakers representing rural areas because it left many counties with no place for residents to take a driver’s license test.

According to Cherokee County Deputy Administrator Daniel Steele, the Cherokee County Driver License Office will be open on the 1st Tuesday of every month beginning November 3rd.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency staff will be available on that day to assist with the issuance of new driver licenses, ID cards and any of the other functions of the ALEA Driver License Offices.
