Cherokee County EMA Releases Latest Numbers & Information Concerning COVID-19

The Cherokee County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security released the latest numbers for Coronavirus cases in Cherokee County on Saturday.

EMA Director Shawn Rogers says that there have been a total of 159 cases – 31 of those active. There have been 121 presumed recoveries and 7 illness related deaths.

In the last two weeks there have been 63 positive cases and 578 individuals tested during that same time period. A total of 1,880 individuals have been tested in Cherokee County thus far.

Director said that delay was due to the Alabama Department of Public Health not sending out a county update Friday due to changes in the report.

Rogers pointed out a significant decrease in active cases due to a change in the quarantine end date and infectious end date. Director Rogers had noticed the quarantine end date being provided for positive cases was about 7-10 days later than the actual quarantine end date given to the patient.

ADPH has now changed that to show an infectious end date only which seems to be a more accurate date. If someone tests positive they’re contacted by an investigator from the ADPH who then determines when the patient began developing symptoms and then provide them with a quarantine date based on that information.

As it appears, if someone tests positive today, it would take 3-7 days for those positive cases to be reported to the county and reflect in the numbers.
