Cherokee County Man Found Not Guilty in 1993 Shooting Death of Wife

Bussey FreeA Cherokee County man has been found Not Guilty on a murder charge, stemming from the death of his wife more than 20 years ago.

James Douglas Bussey of Leesburg – had been indicted by a grand jury in 2011 for shooting his wife, 21 year old Diana Bussey, back in 1993. Her body was found at the Exxon Station on Highway 202 in the Bynum community, where she worked as a clerk; she had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Diana BusseyAccording to ABC/3340 closing arguments were presented last Friday (November 7th) and that Not Guilty verdict was returned following approximately two hours of deliberation by the Calhoun County jury.

The defense focused on showing not only that there was reasonable doubt, in regard to the killer being James Douglas Bussey – but also, that there were other people who could have committed the crime.

Prosecutors say they have not found any evidence pointing toward any other suspects, and Bussey’s daughter from a prior relationship testified that she believed her father was guilty
