Cherokee County Native Nathan Chesnut Honored By The Cherokee County Commission

Nathan Chesnut Honored1One of Cherokee County’s residents was honored by the commission Monday afternoon as they presented Second Lieutenant Nathan Chesnut with a resolution recognizing him as the County’s most recent graduate of a United States Military Academy. Chesnut graduated from West Point on May 28 and become the seventh Cherokee County resident to graduate from a Military Academy.

During regular business the Commission advanced the Park and Recreation Board $90,000 for the completion of a Comfort Station at Cherokee Rock Village Park. According to Commission Chairman, Kirk Day, this is a 3 year advance of the Park Board annual capital improvement appropriation of $30,000. Previously the Park Board had received a $67,000 appropriation from the County Commission to assist with the project.

In other business B.J. Major was appointed to serve on the Department of Human Resources Board to fill the unexpired term of Jay Howell. Stern Agee was designated as the financial advisor for the County in connection with the issuance of General Obligation Warrants for ATRIP funding in the amount of $1,700,000. Health services for the County’s inmates for the next year was approved with a contract renewal from Southern Health Partners Health Services in the amount of $226,281.48.

 

A contract with Jacksonville State University in the amount of $8,000 was approved in conjunction with the County’s Industrial Development Authority for an economic impact analysis of the completion of the four-laning of U.S. highway 411 between Slackland and Turkeytown. The IDA will fund the project.

Three excess land redemptions were approved, along with and advertisement for a part-time Library Assistant position due to a vacancy created by retirement. The Commission also approved the insolvents, errors, and taxes in litigation for 2013 and uncollected insolvents and taxes in litigation for previous years as presented by the Revenue Commissioner. This is an annual process.

The next commission meeting is set for July 14th at 10 am.
