Cherokee County Now Among 47 Counties Listed in “Very High Risk” Catagory for COVID

Cherokee County is one of 47 Alabama counties currently listed in the “very high risk category for the spread of COVID-19.

Acording to the Alabama Department of Public Health the categories are determined primarily by the number of new COVID cases per day.  Counties considered very high risk are those where the number of cases is staying the same or increasing.  Counties with decreasing counts for one to six days are in the high-risk category and a decline of seven to 13 days is considered “moderate.”

Bibb, Bullock, Coosa, Escambia, Jackson, Lamar, Perry, Pickens, and Sumter are the only Alabama counties listed in that low-risk category – meaning they have had a downward case trajectory of 14 or more days or have a rate of 10 cases or less over the previous two weeks.

Choctaw, Clay, Cleburne, Colbert, Greene and Russell were ranked as “moderate risk” and Conecuh, Fayette, Lowndes, Wilcox and Winston were all “high risk.”

The 47 counties in that “Very High Risk” category are as follows – Autauga, Baldwin, Barbour, Blount, Butler, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clarke, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Cullman, Dale, Dallas, DeKalb, Elmore, Etowah, Franklin, Geneva, Hale, Henry, Houston, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Lee, Limestone, Macon, Madison, Marengo, Marion, Marshall, Mobile, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Pike, Randolph, St. Clair, Shelby, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Washington

According to the ADPH variants of COVID continue to circulate in Alabama, which has the lowest vaccination rate in the country.  The state has thus far had a total of 820 Alpha variants – 2 Beta, 31 Gamma and 56 Delta, which is a highly contagious form of coronavirus expected to become the dominant strain in the U.S.

The number of COVID cases reported in Alabama jumped 39% from June 26th to July 9th.  The ADPH is advising people to get vaccinated “as quickly as possible.”

As of July 15th, Alabama has reported 557,578 cases of COVID-19 with 11,439 deaths.
