Cherokee County Officials Discuss The Latest Updates Concerning The COVID-19 Pandemic

There were a number of items for discussion during the COVID-19 News Conference, taking place in the Cherokee County Administration Building Tuesday morning.

Representatives from the Cherokee County Commission, Cherokee County EMA, Floyd-Cherokee EMS, Floyd-Cherokee Medical Center, Cherokee County Superintendent of Education as well as Officials with DeKalb-Cherokee Gas, Cherokee Electric, Cherokee County Water Authority, Cedar Bluff Utilities and the Northeast Water District were all in attendance to provide updates is regards to what their respective entities are doing in response to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

Tiffani Kinard, Chief Nursing Officer at Floyd-Cherokee Medical Center stated that they are currently awaiting the results on one patient who is being treated at the hospital.

Kinard said that it is perfectly safe to come to Floyd-Cherokee Medical Center to receive care. However, under state order visitors are not permitted in the hospital except in special circumstances. Employees and any visitors who are admitted are screened before entering the facility.

Cherokee County EMA Director Shawn Rogers spoke about cases locally and the effort being made to try and slow the spread of the virus on a local level.

Over the past several days there have been a lot of questions regarding what local utility companies would be doing to assist customers who may have lost their job or income during this public health emergency. Randal Wilkie, CEO of Cherokee Electric explains what the Co-Op will be doing.

You can hear comments from other utility company representatives by viewing the video below. Among those that spoke were; Jason Higdon with DeKalb-Cherokee Gas, Johnny Jordan, Northeast Water, Jeff Harrell, Cedar Bluff Utilities, and Sid Garrett, Cherokee County Water Authority.

Cherokee County Superintendent of Education Mitchell Guice spoke briefly providing an update on what parents and students can expect over the next several days.

Superintendent Guice also spoke about necessary contact information for teachers that will be provided to students should they need any assistance.

The Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency will be hosting these Press Conferences on a weekly basis each Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. from the County Commission Chambers and they will be streamed live on the EMA Facebook Page.
