Cherokee County Residents Beware of Jury Duty/Court Date Scam

An ugly scam has made an unwelcome return to Cherokee County – con artists are calling area residents telling them that they failed to show up for jury duty or a court date, and as a result they’re going to be arrested UNLESS they pay a bond in the amount of $1,000 NOW – of course, you know where it goes from there.

The scammer then asks for a credit or debit card number or a bank account number or they tell the victim to go purchase a Green Dot card from a local department store in the amount they’re requesting and call them back with the number; whatever it takes to get their hands on your money.

Stop.  Don’t do it.  It’s just another scam.

Cherokee County Circuit Clerk Duane Amos himself called WEIS Radio to let us know about the scam – he’s had numerous reports that its back in the area.  Amos says there are several different versions of this scam, but they all work basically the same – and he wants to stress that his office DOES NOT contact you by phone for failure to show.

If you’re contacted by someone in such a manner and feel uncomfortable in any way or you have any questions hang up and contact the Circuit Clerk’s Office at (256) 927-3637 OR call the Sheriff’s Office or local Police Department to make a report.

Pass the word along to everyone you know.  This is just another scam, and once that money is gone, it’s gone.  There is no way of getting it back.  Most of these con artists work outside the U.S., making it impossible to track them and recover the funds.

The best protection against a scam, is simply being aware that IT IS a scam, and hanging up the phone.
