Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Visit WEIS Radio

The Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet is set for this Saturday (June 11th), with a total of seven local standouts, taking their place among those honored as being among the finest athletes in the history of high school sports in Cherokee County.

Those being inducted during this year’s gathering include – Paige Anderson McDonald, Josh Moten, Taylor Burt, Jamie Hampton, Lucas McMichen, Bobby Sanders and Charley Whorton and four of the seven, McDonald, Moten, Burt and McMichen, paid a visit to the WEIS Radio studios Thursday morning, to talk about their athletic career and what being inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame means to them.

The Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet begins at 6:00pm Saturday, taking place in the Chamber of Commerce meeting room located on the Gadsden State Cherokee campus 801 Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.

Paige Anderson McDonald

Spring Garden: 2-time Class 1A Player of the Year; 3-time Class 1A State Basketball Champion; Class 1A Volleyball Champion; Paige hit the game winning 3-point shot to send Samford into the NCAA women’s basketball tournament; As an 8th grader played one-on-one against NBA great Shaquille O’Neal. 

Taylor Burt

Sand Rock: 1st Team All-State in three sports her senior year;  Led the Lady Wildcats to Class 2A runner-up finish in basketball; Play collegiately at Gadsden State and Auburn University-Montgomery;  Taylor is has been a head softball coach at Fort Payne.  Currently Burt is coaching at North Jackson.  She has led both teams to the AHSAA playoffs.

Lucas McMichen

2-time All-State First Team in football; First Team All-State in baseball; Led the Wildcats to a 2A state runner-up finish in football; Class 2A Back of the Year; 3 year starter and 4 year letterman and West Georgia University; Lucas recovered from a serious car wreck in the spring of his senior year to have an outstanding college career with the Wolves of West Georgia throwing for over 4,000 yards.   

Josh Moten

Cedar Bluff:  1st Team All-State in 2001 & 2002; Class 1A Back of the Year;  Alabama Sports Writers Association Super 12 Team; Three year starter at JSU; Two time Ohio Valley Conference Champions; On November 1, 2002 Moten eclipsed the Alabama High School record for career receiving yards.  He established a new benchmark of 4,272 yards.  

Jamie Hampton

All-State Quarterback at Cedar Bluff School – leading his team to the State Championship game his senior year.  He later played Quarterback at Troy University.

Bobby Sanders

An all-round top notch athlete at Hatcher High School; he later went on to play minor league baseball.

Charley Whorton

All-State in Basketball at Centre, ranking as their top scorer.
