Despite recording the second-highest job figures in state history, Alabama’s unemployment rate increased slightly in May, probably because of high school and college graduates joining the workforce.
That’s the word from Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington. He announced today that Alabama’s wage and salary employment was slightly over 2,042,000 in May. The last time it measured this level was back in December 2007.
During the past year, Alabama has added 21,600 jobs to its economy. While statewide unemployment remains low, the figures vary from city to city, and Cherokee County reported one of the state’s lowest unemployment rates at 3.4%.
