City Of Centre Discusses Additional One Cent Sales Tax To Fund SRO’s And Other Projects

During their regular meeting on Tuesday, the Centre City Council had a lengthy discussion regarding the possibility of an additional one cent sales tax to offset the cost of some upgrades around the city. Additionally, the conversation involved the possibility of bringing four school resource officers on board to patrol each of the schools located within the city limits including Cherokee County High School, Centre Middle School, Centre Elementary School and the Cherokee County Career & Technology Centre.

Centre Mayor Tony Wilkie said that this would allow the City of Centre, Cherokee County Board of Education, the Cherokee County Commission and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department to work collaboratively in ensuring that the safety of student’s, faculty and staff of the schools are a priority.

During that discussion, Councilman Cedric Williams had this to say.

Other projects that would be funded with money from the proposed increase would include a new city pool and the finishing of the armory building project.

Mayor Wilkie said that the first step would be for the council to approve the one cent sales tax increase and then to move forward with a decision regarding school resource officers. Wilkie said that the topic would be further discussed at an upcoming City Council meeting and once approved a formal decision would be made.

The next Centre City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday October 8, at 5:00 p.m.
