Cleveland Indians removing Chief Wahoo logo from uniforms in 2019

The team announced on Monday that they will abandon the controversial “Chief Wahoo” logo from jersey sleeves and caps starting in the 2019 season.

The decision comes after the Indians faced pressure by Major League Baseball and several other groups that deemed the mascot, a red cartoonish picture of a Native American, outdated and offensive.

“Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game,” MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a statement. “Over the past year, we encouraged dialogue with the Indians organization about the Club’s use of the Chief Wahoo logo.”

Manfred added that the Indians agreed Wahoo “is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball.”

Dolan said in another statement, “We have consistently maintained that we are cognizant and sensitive to both sides of the discussion. While we recognize many of our fans have a longstanding attachment to Chief Wahoo, I’m ultimately in agreement with Commissioner Manfred’s desire to remove the logo from our uniforms in 2019.”

Cleveland has been distancing itself from the logo in recent years and alternated between using Wahoo and a capital “C.”
