Closing Signs Have Been Posted on the Hibbett Sports Storefront in Centre / UPDATED

Closing signs have been posted on the Hibbett Sports storefront in Centre.

WEIS Radio spoke with the Store Manager on Friday and she informed us that everything in the store will go, and prices are already being reduced – the store will remain open through the end of July, operating on regular business hours, Monday through Saturday, 10:00am to 8:00pm and Sundays from 1:00 – 6:00pm.

Approximately two months ago, in late March, it was announced the sporting goods retailer planned to close 95 stores in fiscal 2020 however the locations were not disclosed.  Hibbett said those closures would be offset, in part, by the opening of 10 to 15 new Hibbett and City Gear stores.  The company purchased the 136-store City Gear chain in October of last year.

For the last quarter of 2018, Hibbett opened up a dozen new stores, including two City Gear locations, expanded a high-performing location, and closed a total of 27 stores described as “underperforming.”

Jeff Rosenthal, President and CEO said “While these decisions are never easy, we believe it is in the best interest of our shareholders as we continue to evolve the business and adapt to changing shopping patterns,” Rosenthal, who has been with the company for 21 years, leading it for the past nine, has announced his retirement.  He will reportedly remain at the company as CEO until his replacement is named. Following the transition, he will continue to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

Hibbett currently operates 1,163 locations in 35 states.
