Commencement For Gadsden State Community College Set For Thursday, May 10

The Spring Commencement for Gadsden State Community College will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at Gadsden State Cherokee. Featured speakers will be Gadsden State students Diana Etain, Kennan Worthington and Sharon Zachery.

Etain is a native of McCalla. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Honors Scholar Program. At the recent Honors Day, she was named a Student of Distinction and received the Outstanding Achievement Award. She has a 4.0 GPA, and she has earned a presidential scholarship to the University of Alabama. She has also been accepted to the Honors College and the Blount Scholars Program at UA.

Her career goal is to become an English professor. Worthington is a resident of Gadsden. Two years after dropping out of high school at the age of 16, he earned his GED. Now, he is a member of Lambda Epsilon Chi Paralegal Honor Society and has completed an internship at the Etowah County District Attorney’s office. He has a 3.5 GPA and is receiving his Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal. This fall, he will pursue his bachelor’s degree at Athens State University and is considering pursuing a law degree.

Thirty-six years after graduating from high school, Zachery enrolled at Gadsden State. She is now a member of Phi Theta Kappa, TRiO Student Support Services, the Student Success Club and the National Technical Honor Society. She has been honored with the President’s Cup and the Outstanding Sophomore Technical Student Award. She has a 3.95 GPA and has been awarded the presidential scholarship and the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

She is receiving her Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronic Engineering Technology and will attend UAB to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. She plans to also earn a master’s degree.

Graduates will be presented by Tim Smith, chief information officer, and Dr. Leslie Worthington, dean of Academic Programs and Services. Dr. Martha Lavender, president of Gadsden State, will award the degrees. The Gadsden State A Capella Choir will perform. Jack Mayfield Jr., industrial automation instructor, will serve as the Commencement Grand Marshal.
