Concerned Citizens Discuss With City Leaders Upgrades & Renovations Needed At The JFK Hatcher Community Center

Members of the Hatcher Community Center Committee were again present at Tuesday’s meeting of the Centre City Council to discuss upgrades and renovations that need to be done to the facility.

Committee members presented photos of several of the issues that they consider priority.

During the Council’s previous meeting it was announced that the building, which is the former location of Hatcher High School has now been added to the Alabama Register of Historical Landmarks.

Since the facility is now on that registry, the group is respectfully requesting that the city add $20,000 to next year’s budget for upgrades to the facility. Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver was in attendance at the meeting and offered to provide labor to help with any type of work that needs to be done.

Mayor Tony Wilkie thanked those individuals in attendance for expressing their concerns and ensured them that the city would do their part to work with them to make sure what needs to be done is done. Wilkie said that he would have City Engineer Raymond Matthews inspect the facility and have him present a list of what projects need to be done.

In other business, the Council adopted an updated Speed Limit Ordinance at the request of the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The Council also approved the sale of two seized vehicles for the police department. At the recommendation of Councilwoman Kay Davis, the city is looking into purchasing new banners for the street lights to go along with the appropriate season/holiday’s for January-July; Mayor-Pro Tem Bess Yarbrough requested that a proposal be submitted to the budget committee for consideration.
