Congressman Mike Rogers on Major Disaster Declaration for East Alabama

ROGERS ON MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION FOR EAST ALABAMA

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congressman Mike Rogers made the following statement following the announcement of a major disaster declaration for Calhoun, Cullman, Etowah and St. Clair Counties:

“I want to thank the President for authorizing a federal disaster declaration for the State of Alabama. The severe storms and tornados that ripped through Eastern Alabama had a catastrophic impact on homes and businesses in the community. The devastation sadly fell well outside the scope of what local and state emergency management agencies were able to handle. With assistance from FEMA and the federal government, East Alabamians can now start to rebuild their homes, businesses and their lives.”

On March 19, 2018, a series of severe storms and tornadoes touched down in East Alabama causing widespread damage across numerous counties. While miraculously there was no loss of life as a direct result of the storm, communities were devastated by millions of dollars in structural damages.

After preliminary assessments and consultation with state emergency managers Governor Kay Ivey requested a major disaster declaration be ordered by President Donald Trump. On April 26, 2018, the President announced his declaration of a federal disaster in the area. As a result, federal grants are now available to qualifying individuals and businesses.
