Coosa Rverkeeper Executive Directer Speaks at County Commission Meeting Regarding Complaints Against Local Business

Commission Chairman Tim Burgess welcomed Justinn Overton, Executive Director of the Coosa Riverkeeper organization, to the Cherokee County Commission meeting on Monday morning.  Overton spoke during the Public Comment from Citizen’s portion of the meeting with a lengthy presentation, centering around the recent series of complaints filed against one local business.

Indian Mountain ATV Park has grown to be an incredibly popular area attraction for Cherokee County – drawing visitors from across the southeast and beyond.  The park – covering approximately 4,700 acres, is situated in the Piedmont/Rock Run area, on County Road 8.

Overton stated residents had seen their water supply adversely affected in a number of ways and she presented the Commission with a written report during the meeting.

It appears there are no strict regulations regarding ATV parks or use of waterways of any kind inside those areas.  It’s also unclear just what type of regulatory power that ADEM may, or may not, have within those areas – according to information shared by Ms. Overton:

Commission Chairman Tim Burgess:

Following the meeting, we spoke with Ms. Overton and she summed up the situation by saying this:

We’ve reached out to the owners of Indian Mountain ATV Park to see if they have any comment on the situation, however we’ve yet to be able to make contact.  We hope to speak with them on the matter.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
