County Commission Recognizes The County’s Correctional Officers With Proclamation

It was a brief meeting of the Cherokee County Commission on Monday with a very short agenda.

The commission approved a list of surplus items to be discarded for the sheriff’s department, adopted a resolution providing for Cherokee County’s participation in the Sales Tax Holiday the third weekend of each July, adopted a resolution to renew the Section 5311 Nonurbanized Area Public Transportation program with a local match of $17,183.

The Commission also a resolution recognizing National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, May 7th through the 13th, Sheriff Jeff Shave said he would like to express his gratitude and appreciation to this special group of officers and employees. Cherokee County Commission Chairman Kirk Day read aloud that resolution.

In a statement released by Sheriff Shaver he stated that; “Corrections officers receive little or no recognition for the job they perform.  The average citizen may never think about the services corrections officers provide to the community.  In addition to guarding and protecting the public from convicted criminals, corrections officers also act as protectors, chaplains, and counselors to the inmates. They work inside the walls and interact with some of the most dangerous, unstable, or deviant persons in society”.

The corrections officers of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office are some of the most capable, committed, and compassionate anywhere and consistently excel and perform at the top.  They work diligently to encourage detainees to make better choices to hopefully avoid future incarceration. If you ever get the opportunity to meet the local corrections officers, please take a moment to thank them for the dangerous and important job they perform 24 hours a day, 365 day a year.

The Commission then went into Executive Session to discuss the general reputation and character of an individual and to discuss with the county attorney legal ramifications and legal options. For a session lasting approximately an hour, the commission returned with no action begin taken on the matter.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be Monday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. in the county administration building.
