CEDAR BLUFF – The Cedar Bluff Tigers hosted a five-team jamboree on Thursday to kick off the 2020 high school football season. The following is a brief recap of the action.
North Sand Mountain 21, Sand Rock 13
After a scoreless first quarter, things heated up in the scrimmage’s final quarter.
North Sand Mountain took a seemingly comfortable two-touchdown lead on a 2-yard touchdown run with just under 10 minutes to go and a 44-yard touchdown pass at the 1:09 mark, but Sand Rock gave the Bison a finish.
Sophomore quarterback Ace Ashley connected with junior receiver Olin Pruitt on a 65-yard touchdown pass with 55.1 seconds to go, but the Bison scored just two plays later on a 45-yard touchdown pass to go up 21-7.
Sand Rock scored the scrimmage’s last touchdown with 11 seconds to go on Ashley’s 28-yard touchdown toss to senior Colton Cash for the final.
Ashley completed 4 of 6 pass attempts for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
Spring Garden 6, North Sand Mountain 0
On its first possession after a 33-minute lightning delay, Spring Garden senior running back Weston Kirk scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:18 left in the second quarter for the only points of the Panthers’ scrimmage against North Sand Mountain.
Senior quarterback Ryley Kirk completed 2 of 4 pass attempts for 29 yards. He also had a 49-yard run late in the scrimmage to seal the Panther win.
Plainview 13, Spring Garden 6
Plainview marched 65 yards in 11 plays, capped off by a 25-yard touchdown run on its opening drive to take a 7-0 lead.
After the two teams exchanged punts, Spring Garden got on the scoreboard on Ryley Kirk’s 49-yard touchdown toss to Weston Kirk. The PAT was no good, keeping the score at 7-6 Bears.
On its ensuing drive, Plainview scored on a 27-yard touchdown run for the final.
Plainview 14, Cedar Bluff 0
Plainview scored on touchdown runs of 17 yards in the first quarter and 2 yards in the second to take a 14-0 victory over Cedar Bluff in the final varsity scrimmage of the evening.
Plainview B-team 18, Cedar Bluff 0
Plainview’s B-team scored on all three of its possessions on runs of 37, 15 and 56 yards to take an 18-0 win over Cedar Bluff in the jamboree nightcap.
