Over 130 participants took place in the Inaugural Run 4 Val 5K/10K Chief’s Challenge 3 Person Relay held in downtown Centre on Saturday in honor of former longtime Centre Police Chief Val Courtney.

Among those in attendance was Bill Meehan, President of Jacksonville State University – he shared his thoughts on the event.

Eva Garner, Owner of the Odyssey Health Spa & Fitness Center as well as a close friend to Chief Courtney said that she was very overwhelmed with the turnout for the event.

Proceeds from the event will go toward a Scholarship for a Criminal Law Degree as requested by Chief Courtney.

Chief Courtney’s son Caleb who serves as an Officer with the State Board of Pardons and Paroles said that he was much honored to see the support for his late father.

Cherokee County Probate Judge Kirk Day also spoke of Chief Courtney.

Following the race a motorcycle rally in Courtney’s memory was held at the Odyssey with over 40 plus bikers taking part in the event – Chief Courtney was an avid biker.
