ABC/Randy Holmes(NEW YORK) — David Letterman returned to late night TV for the first time since retiring in 2015, appearing on Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! taping in Jimmy’s hometown, Brooklyn, New York, and caught Jimmy and his viewers up on how he’s been spending his retirement. One story involved a horse he sent, shortly after his retirement, to fellow late night host Conan O’Brien as a joke that went awry.
The plan, according to Letterman, was that O’Brien would bring the horse on stage during his show, where it would relieve itself, after which Conan would return it.
“Days later, I realized something had gone terribly wrong,” the 70-year-old former Late Show host continued. “I got this lovely letter from him saying his wife has decided to keep it because she’s an equestrian.”
That wasn’t the response Letterman was hoping for, he said, explaining, “I was counting on him returning the horse and I get my money back.”
That’s not the end of the story, as Conan during an appearance on Friday’s Late Show, told current host Stephen Colbert that the horse had “gone crazy.”
“So, now he’s complaining,” said Letterman. “There may be litigation, and maybe I’ll get a call from PETA.”
“So, if you run into Conan,” Letterman pleaded to Kimmel, “Just say it was supposed to be a joke.”
