The major car pileup occurred in the westbound lanes of the interstate I-96 in Livingston County, according to Michigan State Police.

Sudden whiteout conditions, as well as black ice on the roads have been cited by police as contributors to the deadly crash.

The snow — and other accidents — continue to pile up. Police said crashes have occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-96, as well.

According to ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV in Detroit, authorities were shutting down both lanes at Fowlerville Road. Multiple fire departments have been called to the scene and some drivers and passengers have been extricated from their vehicles.
