Death of Man Being Booked in at Chattooga County Jail Under Investigation / UPDATED

A man who had been arrested on traffic charges on Tuesday afternoon died as he was being booked into the Chattooga County, Georgia Jail.

Sheriff Mark Schrader said that Joey Kevin Boyd, age 46, had been brought in shortly before 4:00pm and during the booking process began to complain of not feeling well and moments later collapsed to the floor.  Detention staff and the jail nurse provided medical attention while 9-1-1 was called.  Boyd was transported by Redmond EMS to Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, and the sheriff was informed a short time later that he had died.

Schrader contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, saying that although it appeared to be a medical issue, he was requesting a complete investigation into the incident.
