DeKalb County Forced to Hold Costly Special Election for the Position of Constable

CCSO - Pack DeKalb County will be forced to hold a Special Election to fill the position of constable; that, in the wake of the forced resignation of Kneeley Pack, who was recently sentenced on fraud charges. There is still more than a year left on that term in the District 1 post – so a Special Election will be held September 15th.

Estimates in regard to the cost of holding that election, range anywhere from $30,000 up to $100,000.

Those wishing to run in that election, may turn in applications, between June 29th and July 14th.

The duties of a constable include the serving of papers – and they may be called on to assist the sheriff’s office with any domestic disputes.

In most areas, the position has been done away with. Out of 67 Alabama counties currently only 31 still elect constables. As a matter of fact DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in his nine years on the job, not once has he ever called on a constable.

Several members of the DeKalb County Commission are reportedly looking at changing the law and eliminating the position once the current terms are up.
