Dryer Days Ahead Locally, But Shelters To Remain Open

Dryer days may finally be coming following the recent flooding affecting our local area.

A new release from the National Weather Service on Tuesday morning has finally cancelled the flood warning for the Coosa River at Weiss Dam. The flood stage is set at 567’ and current Weiss Lake levels stand at 566’ 4”.

Flood warnings are still continuing for the Coosa River at Childersburg and Gadsden, but levels are continuing to fall with the hope that these flood warnings will soon be lifted as well. All residents are still advised to not drive into flooded areas, as some roads in the Weiss Lake area are still underwater despite the lifted flood warning.

For those displaced by the recent flooding, the Cherokee County EMA Disaster Relief Shelter will continue to be open and available. The shelter provides hot meals, showers, restrooms, and cots, with all services available 24 hours a day.

The Town of Cedar Bluff also will continue with their portable shower unit located at Town Hall for those affected residents. The restroom facilities located in the town park as always are available to use 24 hours a day, and the community center will also be open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily.

Assistance from individuals and local businesses, civic groups, churches, and other organizations is still being sought by the shelter. This includes a need for meals, or for donations of items such as water, cleaning supplies, snacks, and other useful items. Volunteers also continue to be needed, especially during late night and early morning hours. For more information on how to help out, call 256-484-1071.

A pet shelter is also set up, with the EMS providing additional units for the nearly dozen domesticated animals displaced by the floods. This shelter is located at the softball complex behind the Gadsden State Cherokee campus in Centre. Make sure to sign in your pets if you do bring them to the shelter.

Volunteers are also still needed for the animal shelter, with those who wish to help asked to call 256-484-1216 for more information.
