Eric Liebowitz/HBO(NEW YORK) — The women accusing actor Dustin Hoffman of sexual misconduct are thanking John Oliver in a letter for confronting the star about his past behavior.

“We want to thank you for confronting Dustin Hoffman,” the group wrote in a statement published on Twitter. “While the questions you asked may not have led to the constructive conversation you hoped for, the fact that you asked them all is what matters most.”

“Many men listen to and believe women when we recount our experiences of sexual harassment and assault. But few men put themselves at risk — socially or professionally — to have uncomfortable conversations with other men,” they continued. “Women can continue to tell our stories, but ultimately, change will depend on men reflecting on their own behavior and challenging other men to do the same.”

At a panel for the Tribeca Film Institute, the Last Week Tonight host pressed Hoffman about the allegations against him  Hoffman avoided answering the questions, which frustrated Oliver.

“It didn’t really go anywhere constructive, so the whole thing just made me feel sad,” Oliver said later on The Russell Howard Hour on SkyOne TV. “I just wanted it to become something more constructive, but it was clear pretty early on that was not going to happen. [But] I did try. I tried and failed.”

Hoffman has been accused of misconduct by several women, including Anna Graham Hunter, who alleged that when she was a 17-year old intern on the set of Hoffman’s television film, Death of a Salesman, Hoffman questioned her about her sex life and, on more than one occasion, grabbed her backside.

Hoffman has apologized for “anything I might have done” at that time.
