Everything you need to know heading into season five of “Orange Is the New Black”

Netflix/Cara Howe(NEW YORK) — If you watch Orange is the New Black, you know last year’s season finale was insane. With season five now streaming on Netflix, here’s quick a recap of season four:

The biggest moment in season four was the death of Samira Wiley’s Poussey; a guard suffocated her after an incident in the cafeteria.

This loss not only affected her best friend, Taystee, played by Danielle Brooks, but also Emmy-winner Uzo Aduba’s Crazy Eyes, whom Poussey was trying to help before her death. Komiko Glenn’s Brooke also lost her girlfriend, so the death will reverberate in season five.

Taystee, who was working as a secretary for Nick Sandow’s Caputo, overhears that her boss is standing by Bayley, and she loses it. Following that, the inmates are incensed by what’s happening at their prison, which leads to another fan favorite flipping out: Dascha Polanco’s Daya, distraught all year over the loss of her baby steals a guard’s gun. Season four ends with her aiming it at his head.

Meanwhile, Lea DeLaria’s Boo stepped up for Taryn Manning’s Pennsatucky, after a guard forced himself on her in the previous season. The guard eventually apologized, causing a rift between the two unlikely friends.

Taylor Schilling’s Piper spent season four running an illegal underwear ring, but ended up being branded with a Nazi swastika by Maria after she got her in trouble and had time added to her sentence. This troubling experience calmed Piper, and she reconnected with Laura Prepon’s Alex, her former girlfriend who put her in jail in the first place.

Alex had been protecting Lori Petty’s Lolly, who killed a guard for her, because he was really a hit-man paid by Alex’s former boss to kill her. Lolly eventually was caught and sent away to the psych ward.
