Fire Breaks Out Monday Night at Old GH Metals Building in Downtown Ft Payne

A fire broke out at a building owned by GH Metals in downtown Ft Payne Monday night

Ft Payne Fire Chief Ron Saferite said the building was believed to be empty.  He said they’ve recently had problems with homeless people seeking shelter in a lean-to located next to the building and they’re unsure at this point if that had anything to do with the fire.

Saferite said there was no power to the building.  Firefighters were able to bring that blaze under control and keep it from spreading to businesses bordering Gault Avenue.

Chief Saferite said all available units were called and there was a near 100% turnout of City Firefighters.  He praised their hard work saying “I’m really proud of them – they did a great job.”

He said an official investigation into the cause of the fire would begin immediately.
